Helpful Hints and Essential Driving Tips

Hi folks,

I thought I would share some of the tips that I talk to my trainees about while we are out on the road.

Essential Tips for Safe Driving

1. Use the EzyReg App

If you don’t already have the EzyReg app, get it. With this app, you can check the registration of any vehicle you drive. This includes cars you don’t own, such as loan cars or rental vehicles. The sting in the tail here is that if you’re caught driving an unregistered car, it’s a big fine as well as a loss of demerit points. This applies even if it’s not your car.

2. Always Check Your Mirrors

Always check your mirrors before you brake or turn. It’s a simple habit that can prevent accidents.

3. Maintain a Safe Following Distance

When following another vehicle, always keep a three-second gap. It doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling at 3 kph or 3000 kph—this rule always applies.

4. Never Queue Over Railway Crossings

Do not queue over railway crossings. You will never win an argument with a train. Trust me on this one. I’ve been involved in five level crossing smashes with trains I was operating for Steam Ranger. Stay safe, and keep clear.

5. Obey Road Work Speed Limits

Always obey road work speeds. Road workers deserve a fair go too. Speeding in a road work area is dangerous. No one wants to injure or kill someone, so slow down. Remember, you must not increase your speed until you’ve passed the “End Roadworks” sign.

6. Leave Space in Traffic

When queuing in traffic, leave enough room between your car and the one in front so you can see where their tyres touch the bitumen. This simple rule helps traffic flow better and gives you more reaction time.

7. Pay Attention to Changes in Your Car

If your car feels or sounds different than it did the last time you drove it, something is probably wrong. Get out, have a look around, and check under the bonnet. If you’re unsure, get it checked by a professional.

8. Don’t Ignore Warning Lights

Dashboard warning lights are there for a reason. For example:

  • An oil light doesn’t mean you can top up your oil next time you fill up—it means your engine is about to seize. Without oil, an engine lasts about four minutes, and the result will be very expensive.
  • Keep an eye on your engine temperature too. Overheating can lead to costly repairs.

9. Be Mindful of Your Emotions

Remember, don’t drive when you’re stupid, angry, or sad. Your emotional state affects your ability to make good decisions.

10. A Car Is Not a Weapon

A car can be a weapon. Don’t be the one who weaponizes it.

Thanks,
Mark
